New Orleans Pelicans small forward Trey Murphy III is having his best year as a pro. He’s played 51 games for the Pelicans this season, with Wednesday’s matchup against the Miami Heat marking his 52nd appearance in 2025-26.
Murphy has produced career-best numbers this season. Entering the Heat game, he’s averaged 22.2 points on 47.7% shooting, 5.7 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.5 steals in 35.8 minutes per contest. The 6-foot-8 forward has been a real threat from beyond the arc, too, knocking down 3.3 triples per game on a 38.0% clip.
Murphy, however, suffered an injury against the Heat. He left the game due to a shoulder issue and did not return.
It is unclear exactly how Murphy sustained his injury. However, he managed 27 minutes of action. The former No. 17 overall pick finished with 19 points on 7-of-15 shooting, four rebounds, six assists and two three pointers.
After leaving the game, the Pelicans took to social media to announce an update on Murphy’s injury. The official diagnosis on the 25-year-old is right shoulder soreness. The Pelicans announced that Murphy had been ruled out for the rest of the game.

The silver lining is that the injury does not seem serious. Moreover, this was New Orleans’ last game before the All-Star break. Murphy will get more than one week of rest before their next game. The Pelicans will return to action on Feb. 20 in a home matchup against the Milwaukee Bucks.
New Orleans took another loss on Wednesday. They came up short against the Heat, 123-111. This loss snapped the Pelicans’ recent two-game winning streak.
New Orleans dropped to 15-41 after Wednesday’s defeat. They remain 14th in the Western Conference and are quickly falling out of the play-in race.
