Nikola Jokic is widely regarded as the best basketball player in the world, but he’s completely different from most NBA superstars.

While most players embrace the spotlight and enjoy building a personal brand, Jokic has absolutely no interest in becoming a household name.

The Denver Nuggets center is often mocked for his lack of enthusiasm off the court, as he treats professional basketball like a regular job.

Teammate Peyton Watson has now explained what it’s really like to have Jokic as a teammate after playing with him for three seasons.

Peyton Watson names the common misconception people have about Nikola Jokic

People often assume that Jokic interacts with teammates and coaches similarly to reporters and spectators, but that is not true.

Watson revealed that Jokic is not an “emotionless” person and that he is actually “the biggest jokester” in the Nuggets locker room.

“It’s great just to learn from them,” Watson said about playing with Jokic and Jamal Murray. “From day one, I’ve always looked at what they’ve done and spectated from afar when I wasn’t really playing.

“I was just always watching what they would do and their work habits, what time they were getting to the gym, what they were eating before the games.

“They’re just two super consistent dudes. They’re consistent with their work, they’re consistent in their approach to the game, and in their demeanors.

“It seems at times like Jokic can be emotionless and things like that, but when you’re really around him on a day-to-day basis, he’s the biggest jokester. He’s the most animated person sometimes.

“I just feel like when both of those two get on the court, they’re killers. And obviously, playing alongside them, they make the game easy. They draw so much attention themselves that it just opens up spots for me.”

Peyton Watson now part of strong Denver Nuggets bench

The Nuggets’ lack of depth was problematic during the 2025 NBA Playoffs, and the front office has addressed it this offseason.

They traded away Dario Saric for backup center Jonas Valanciunas, who should allow Jokic to rest for around 10 minutes per game in the postseason.

Position Starter Bench
PG Jamal Murray Bruce Brown
SG Christian Braun Julian Strawther
SF Cameron Johnson Tim Hardaway Jr
PF Aaron Gordon Peyton Watson
C Nikola Jokic Jonas Valanciunas

The Nuggets also signed Bruce Brown to a minimum contract after letting him go to the Indiana Pacers in free agency two years ago.

Denver’s other move to strengthen the second unit was to acquire Tim Hardaway Jr from the Detroit Pistons on a one-year deal.
