Phoenix Suns, Charlotte Hornets Discuss Bold Trade Involving Centers

The Phoenix Suns and Charlotte Hornets are reportedly discussing a trade that would send Jusuf Nurkić and draft capital to Charlotte in exchange for Nick Richards before the NBA trade deadline, according to John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports 98.7.

Nurkić, who began the season as the Suns’ starting center, has fallen out of favor recently. After coming off the bench for two games, he was listed as a DNP-CD in Phoenix’s last two contests, sparking new rumors about him as an NBA trade candidate.

Centers in NBA Tade Rumors

While Nurkić offers rebounding and interior size, his $18.13 million salary this season and $19.38 million guaranteed for next season make him a challenging trade piece to move.

Nick Richards has been a bright spot for the Hornets, averaging 9.2 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks in 21.2 minutes per game this season. The 6-foot-11 center provides Charlotte with an efficient, younger option at a manageable $5 million salary, which runs through 2025-26.

For Phoenix, acquiring Richards would reduce financial commitments while adding much-needed depth and versatility to their frontcourt.

Charlotte Hornets Ready for Move?

To meet NBA salary-matching requirements, the Hornets would need to include at least one additional player earning $5.63 million or more in the deal. Phoenix is reportedly interested in Cody Martin, a versatile wing who has rebounded well from injury struggles.

At the same time, Charlotte may prefer to send Vasilije Micic, a former EuroLeague MVP who has struggled in the NBA. Martin and Micic have non-guaranteed salaries for 2025-26, providing flexibility for either team.

Other potential options could include Grant Williams or Josh Green. However, Williams is sidelined for the season following knee surgery, and Green’s availability remains uncertain. Any additions would need to align with Phoenix’s strategy to manage second-apron restrictions while improving its rotation depth.

Phoenix Suns Willing to Add Draft Capital

Phoenix currently has three tradable second-round picks, including Denver’s 2026 and 2031 selections and their own 2031 pick. These assets could be included to incentivize Charlotte to take on Nurkić’s contract. However, the Hornets may hesitate to absorb his sizable salary, which could significantly limit their financial flexibility in the 2025-26 season.

For Charlotte, this trade could serve as an opportunity to offload contracts like Micic or Martin while gaining valuable draft assets. However, the Hornets must determine if taking on Nurkić aligns with their rebuilding timeline and long-term goals.

Deadline Looms for Both Teams

As the February 6 trade deadline approaches, both teams face critical decisions. For the Suns, trading Nurkić would free up salary and address depth issues in their frontcourt. For the Hornets, the deal hinges on whether the Suns’ offer—including draft compensation—is strong enough to justify taking on Nurkić’s contract.

With Nurkić and Richards as the centerpieces, the outcome of these talks will depend on both sides’ willingness to make concessions and align their priorities. As discussions progress, the Suns and Hornets remain motivated to find common ground and finalize a deal.
