The Phoenix Suns have had a rough all-around season. Despite high expectations at the beginning of the year, things have not gone according to plan in any way.
With a 36-45 record, the Suns have been eliminated from playoff contention entering the final day of the regular season. Due to their poor performance this season, Phoenix is expected to make major changes during the offseason.
Kevin Durant is obviously the big name connected to potential change for the Suns. The team is widely expected to be open to trading the superstar forward.
Another change could be on the horizon as well.
According to a report from ESPN's Tim MacMahon, Phoenix is expected to fire head coach Mike Budenholzer after just one season.
Budenholzer has been a head coach in the NBA since the 2013-14 season when he started with the Atlanta Hawks. He has coached in every season since that point.
Throughout his head coaching career, Budenholzer has compiled a 520-362 record in 882 total games. He also led the Milwaukee Bucks to a championship during the 2020-21 season.
As for Durant, it seems very likely he'll be playing elsewhere next season. There are a few teams who have already been connected as potential suitors, with the Dallas Mavericks being one of those teams.
To say that the latest era of Suns basketball was a disappointment would be an understatement. After being so close to winning a championship just a few short years ago, Phoenix has a lot of work to do to get back to that level of play.
Assuming he does end up getting fired, the 55-year-old coach will become one of the best head coaching candidates available for other teams looking to make a change.
