The Detroit Pistons were the surprise team in the NBA last season and they will now enter the 2025-26 season with high expectations after their historic turnaround.
Of course, the Pistons made the playoffs as the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference last season after finishing with the NBA’s worst record the prior two seasons.
Most of Detroit’s success last year came because of their young core of Cade Cunningham, Ausar Thomspon, Jaden Ivey and Jalen Duren, though they also had some key veterans such as Tobias Harris, Tim Hardaway Jr. and Malik Beasley play a large role as well.
Despite this, Hardaway Jr. and Dennis Schroder left in free agency and Beasley’s career is uncertain due to an investigation due to gambling allegations.
While the Pistons did lose these players, they were able to add Caris LeVert, Duncan Robinson and Javonte Green this summer with hopes of grabbing a top seed in the East this season and contending for a championship.
Of course, Detroit could also look to make more moves before the start of the season or before next season’s trade deadline and Hoops Wire’s Sam Amico recently named Harris as a potential trade candidate for them.
“It’s doubtful the Pistons would do this, because they love Tobias Harris. But anyone could be moved in the right package. An older veteran such as Harris, on an otherwise young team, could be the guy on the go if Detroit starts exploring,” Amico wrote.
Amico makes a great point about how the Pistons are unlikely to trade Harris, though it is not completely out of the question, especially since he is entering the final year of his contract.
Last season, the 33-year-old forward averaged 13.7 points, 5.9 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.0 steals per game while shooting 47.7% from the field and 34.5% from three.
Harris played a large role for the Pistons in his first season with the franchise last season and he is set to have the same role next season.
Despite this, the Pistons could look to trade him at some point next season if they decide to go after another star player or potentially a younger one to fit the rest of their core.
