Pistons Announce Disappointing Cade Cunningham Injury Update After Wizards Game

The Detroit Pistons have emerged as the top team in the Eastern Conference, completing a remarkable turnaround after enduring a 28-game losing streak during the 2023–24 season. Their rise has been fueled by superstar Cade Cunningham, who has been outstanding as the team’s leader, alongside first-time All-Star Jalen Duren. The duo has driven much of the Pistons’ success, with strong support from key role players like Ausar Thompson and Tobias Harris.

However, their recent game against the Washington Wizards raised concerns, as Cade exited early with back spasms after diving for a loose ball and being landed on by Tre Johnson in the first quarter. He did not participate in the team’s next practice (h/t Omari Sankofa II, Detroit Free Press), leaving his availability uncertain.

This isn’t Cade’s first injury setback. His most serious came in 2022–23, when a left shin stress fracture limited him to 12 games and required surgery, sidelining him for most of the season.

Despite this setback for the Pistons, Cade has been excellent this season. Across 61 games, the 24-year-old is averaging 24.5 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 9.9 assists while shooting 46.1% from the field and 34.6% from three-point range. He has also been impactful defensively, averaging 2.4 stocks per game.

His high-level pick-and-roll efficiency, combined with his effective mid-range and post scoring, makes him one of the league’s most complete guards, while his leadership continues to elevate the team.

Cade’s belief in the team has never wavered, saying during the 2023–24 season, “We’re not 2-26 bad. No way are we that bad.” He was right, as the team has come together and found success. Alongside him, first-time All-Star 22-year-old Jalen Duren has been dominant, averaging 19.0 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 1.7 assists while shooting 64.2% from the field and 72.8% from the free-throw line.

A former Oklahoma State University Cowboy standout and the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, He has developed into one of the league’s premier guards. Cade is a two-time All-Star, earned All-NBA honors in 2024–25, and was named to the All-Rookie Team in 2021–22. He has grown into the face of the Pistons franchise, leading the team with his scoring, playmaking, and leadership.

His impact has been evident in Detroit’s turnaround this season, helping guide the team to consistent success. In July 2025, he signed a five-year, $224 million maximum rookie extension, making him the highest-paid player in franchise history. The Pistons clearly view Cunningham as their cornerstone and remain committed to building around him for the future.
