The Detroit Pistons entered the NBA offseason looking to upgrade their roster around their young core led by Cade Cunningham.
Of course, the Pistons are coming off an incredible season that saw them go from being the worst team in the NBA the prior two seasons to making the playoffs.
With this historic turnaround, the Pistons are now trying to take advantage of a weakened Eastern Conference next season, though they did have some key decisions to make in free agency.
Detroit entered free agency with four key players being unrestricted free agents in Tim Hardaway Jr., Malik Beasley, Paul Reed and Dennis Schroder.
Reed re-signed with Detroit but Hardaway Jr. left to join the Denver Nuggets and Schroder signed with the Sacramento Kings, though it turned into a sign-and-trade deal that was finalized on Monday.
The Pistons announced on Monday that they had acquired a 2026 second-round pick from the Kings in a sign-and-trade that sent Schroder and a 2029 second-round pick to Sacramento.
Detroit also sent a message to Schroder on social media after his departure from the franchise.
“Thank you for everything, Dennis,” the Pistons posted on X along with the sign-and-trade details.
Thank you for everything, Dennis ❤️

OFFICIAL - The Detroit Pistons announced today that the team has acquired a 2026 second round pick via a sign-and-trade with the Sacramento Kings, sending guard Dennis Schröder and a 2029 second round pick to Sacramento. pic.twitter.com/NqMPnYhS0L
This is a major loss for the Pistons as Schroder played a large role off the bench for them last season after they acquired him from the Golden State Warriors at the trade deadline in the deal that sent Miami Heat star Jimmy Butler to Golden State.
In his 28 games in Detroit last season, the 31-year-old guard averaged 10.8 points, 2.6 rebounds and 5.3 assists per game while shooting 37.8% from the field and 30.2% from three-point range.
Schroder was a great addition to the Pistons’ bench last season as he brought a spark behind Cunningham but he now departs Detroit to head to Sacramento where he will likely become their new starting point guard entering next season.
