The Detroit Pistons seemed primed to make a deep run in the NBA playoffs last season. But they didn't. Things didn't go as smoothly as Detroit had hoped, and the team fell to the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference semifinals. It was a heartbreaker. And the Pistons want to make sure it doesn't happen again.
Detroit has come a long way in just a few years. Remember, this is a team that went 14-68 in the 2023-24 season. Now, they're a playoff team. Star player Cade Cunningham is also becoming one of the most high-profile players in the NBA.
As head coach JB Bickerstaff and the team learned in the playoffs, Cunningham can't do it all. He needs help. Thankfully, the Pistons inched the right way to help Cunningham in the NBA draft.
There was little doubt that the Pistons would try to get a Cunningham complement in the NBA Draft, and that's just what they did. The team drafted Ebuka Okorie with their No. 17 selection and Ugonna Onyenso at No. 53.
Okorie is really the perfect Cunningham supporter. He's fast. He applies real pressure at the rim. He can help Cunningham make shots and, yes, win games. Simply put, Okorie is a point guard who can help Cunningham get points on the board. What's not to love about that?
Onyenso is good for different reasons. He's more of a typical developmental pick. He's a great defender and takes on a meaningful role after getting some experience. Between Okorie and Onyenso, the Pistons have really put themselves in a solid position for next season.
