Shaquille O'Neal made an on-air gaffe of epic proportions this week when he applauded Chauncey Billups, not J.B. Bickerstaff, for doing a fine job coaching the Pistons. In his defense, O'Neal said he doesn't watch Detroit's games, rendering his praise meaningless.
O'Neal wasn't done hiding his true feelings about the modern NBA. On Wednesday, he went on "The Pat McAfee Show" and gloated about only watching the games he's paid to watch as a TNT analyst.
"I don't watch that [expletive] when I'm not working," O'Neal said when asked about the Thunder's NBA title chances.
That's not the flex you think, Mr. O'Neal. If you're being paid to talk about the NBA, the least you can do is familiarize yourself with the 30 coaches. And even if you don't watch games night-to-night, it's best not to admit it and instead feign your passion for the league.
The Pistons are tired of Shaq's disrespect. Through a creative social media post, the franchise reminded him of the 2004 NBA Finals when his Lakers underestimated the Pistons and paid dearly.

The ironic part of O'Neal's willful ignorance about the Pistons is that he recently called them "boring" on his "The Big Podcast," only to turn around and praise their head coach.

It's crystal clear that "Big Diesel" was being disingenuous in his praise for the Pistons, a team he admittedly doesn't watch.
Analysts like O'Neal come across as mercenaries monetizing off their names, not true lovers of basketball. They don't do the NBA media any favors and definitely aren't doing enough to promote the sport's growth. They're proving LeBron James right about the negativity and a lack of appreciation for the details and nuances of the beautiful game.
