As Keith Langlois wrote for the official website of the Detroit Pistons earlier this week, the club feared the worst after rookie guard Killian Hayes injured his hip in the second half of Monday's 125-115 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks that dropped Detroit to 1-6 on the season.
Detroit confirmed on Wednesday that the 19-year-old has suffered a torn labrum and is out indefinitely. "Hayes will continue to be evaluated by team medical staff and further updates will be provided as appropriate," the Pistons added.
No timetable for his return was mentioned in the update.
Detroit selected Hayes seventh overall in the 2020 draft. He started in all seven games before this setback but averaged only 4.6 points, 3.6 assists, and 1.1 rebounds while shooting 25 percent from three-point range and 27.7 percent from the field.
On Monday, Langlois suggested that Hayes could be sidelined for "a month or more" depending on the severity of the injury. After the Pistons confirmed the specific problem, Vincent Goodwill of Yahoo Sports reported the Pistons could get Hayes back within 4-6 weeks if surgery isn't necessary. Hayes may, however, miss the remainder of the campaign if he has to go under the knife to repair the problem.
