Projecting Meleek Thomas’ Role During Rookie Season With Cavs

It was a bit of a disappointment to Cavs fans when they traded out of the first round of the 2026 NBA Draft. It didn’t take long, though, for them to make those same folks happy. The selection of Meleek Thomas at #34 certainly created some buzz.

And by the time the Vegas Summer League was over, it was clear that Koby Altman and co. may have had the steal of the draft. It’s not every day that a statement like that is made about the second-round of the draft so soon.

Let’s project where the Arkansas product fits into the Cavs next year, and what his role may look like.

Projecting Meleek Thomas’ Minutes

There is no doubt that Meleek Thomas is good enough to play NBA minutes right now. The only hurdle in the way at this point is Dennis Schröder still being on the roster. Owed $14 million next year, the veteran would be in line for opportunities on day one. That just needs to become finalized so the depth chart can be updated.

Realistically, Thomas will be playing minutes behind James Harden. When he goes to the bench, the rookie would enter the game as a secondary scorer and playmaker on the second unit. He may also be in the same situation that Tyrese Proctor was in to open last season.

Of course, that means getting the minutes to start the 2nd and 4th quarters. Situationally, he could play more some days and far fewer on others. It’s been a staple of the Kenny Atkinson rotations over the past couple of campaigns. That probably projects to Thomas logging 10-14 minutes per contest.

A Strong Bench In Cleveland

Of course, the Cavs will probably have Jaylon Tyson off the bench next season. The sharpshooting and charge-taking of Sam Merrill will continue to be on display. Nae’Qwan Tomlin should be stepping in for an every day opportunity. It’s also been stated that Mario Hezonja would likely be in the rotation every night.

That leaves Meleek Thomas in a race for that 10th spot. Based on his strong beginning, a fully healthy roster would have him as #10, the second guard off the bench. Entering ahead of Tyrese Proctor and Craig Porter Jr., he’ll have the nightly opportunity to make plays. Both of the others are extremely talented, but seeing what we did, it would be tough to not see the Arkansas product out there. Carmelo Anthony himself even said that he was the most impressive player in the Summer League.
