When it comes to their free agency signings, the biggest contract given out by the Los Angeles Lakers went to guard Quentin Grimes who signed a four-year, $60 million deal after spending the last couple years with the Philadelphia 76ers.

Grimes had been trying to earn a long-term deal for some time, so to be able to finally achieve that meant a lot for him. But earning that contract didn’t mean the work stopped. In fact, Grimes would celebrate the news breaking of him signing with the Lakers by getting right back in the gym, via Marc J. Spears of Andscape:

“I kind of broke down when the news broke with Shams and everything,” Grimes said prior to the Lakers’ preseason game Tuesday night. “It finally paid off, and then I went right back to the gym. People started congratulating me once he tweeted it. Everyone was congratulating you and going crazy.

“I was in the gym with my trainer. We had a quick little moment. He’s been with me since fifth grade. It was a good opportunity, for sure.”

That mindset and work ethic is what has gotten Grimes to this point in his career and will allow him to thrive in his new home with the Lakers. Putting on the purple and gold has always been a dream for him, as he has spoken about his father being a Lakers fan and taking him to games as a child to watch Kobe Bryant. And he celebrated his deal in the exact way Bryant would have loved, by getting right back to work.

Grimes is set to be an important piece for this team and will likely be in the starting lineup alongside Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves. He will be relied upon as a primary defender on opposing guards while also providing spacing on offense and operating as another creator, capable of getting his own shot or finding others. He has looked strong in the preseason so far as well, averaging 13.3 points while knocking down 46.2% from 3-point range.

If the Lakers are going to compete with the top teams in the NBA, Grimes will have to perform at a high level and he has been putting in the work to ensure that happens this season.

JJ Redick has yet to finalize Lakers starting lineup

While most assume Grimes will be a starter come opening night, head coach JJ Redick made it clear that nothing has been finalized in terms of the Lakers’ starting lineup.
