Questionable foul call ruins epic Kings comeback

Questionable foul call ruins epic Kings comeback

Trailing by 15 points with under two minutes to play, DeMar DeRozan and Russell Westbrook led a furious Sacramento Kings comeback to force overtime. But with seconds remaining in what would have been Sacramento's best win of the season, referee Marc Davis called a game-deciding foul from well behind the play.

With no timeouts remaining, Portland Trail Blazers forward Deni Avdija sprinted up the court and missed his attempt at a game-winner. As the Kings began to celebrate, Davis indicated a shooting foul and Avdija sank both free throws for a 134-133 Blazers win.

DeMar DeRozan's heroics were wasted

DeRozan had a game-high 33 points for the Kings, who were playing without the injured Zach LaVine and Domantas Sabonis. Eight of those points came in the final minute of the fourth quarter and 14 more came in overtime, including a go-ahead shot with 4.4 seconds to go. DeRozan shot 3-for-4 on three-pointers and 10-for-10 from the foul line.

He's shooting at a very low volume, only two attempts per game, but DeRozan is making 41.8% of his threes this season. DeRozan continues to elevate his game in the clutch as he often does, thanks to his ability to get to his spots on the court and draw fouls. The problem is he's on a team that's often not close enough for it to matter late in games.

They shouldn't have been close Thursday night after the Kings scored only two points in the first 4:47 of the fourth quarter. But in the last two minutes, the Kings drew nine free throws, forced a shot clock violation and DeRozan hit two huge shots, the last coming off a deflected pass to tie the game.

In OT, DeRozan put an apparent bow on a closing effort worthy of Alec Baldwin in "Glengarry Glen Ross," but the controversial foul call ruined his effort. No Cadillac, no set of steak knives, just the Kings falling to 6-21 after a play that neither Avdija (35 points) nor the referee nearest the play seemed to think was a foul in the immediate aftermath.

Russell Westbrook got a brutal whistle

Westbrook was running towards the basket, not Avdija, during the Blazers star's desperate drive. Nevertheless, he got tagged for the game-deciding foul after one his best performances of the season.

The 37-year-old guard finished with 20 points on 8-for-11 shooting and 10 assists. He scored six points in the final 1:29 of regulation, including a spinning layup that made it a one-possession game and set up DeRozan's dramatic three.

In a season where very little has gone right for the Kings, DeRozan and Westbrook have been bright spots. The officials robbed the two veterans of an improbable, epic comeback win. With the Kings falling to 6-21, the game also increased the chances that both former All-Stars will be contributing their brand of late-game magic to a team outside of Sacramento sooner than later.

DeRozan did his best to take down the Blazers Thursday night. Neither he or Westbrook could get past the refs.
