The Atlanta Hawks continue to surge in the Eastern Conference despite the absence of superstar guard Trae Young. Jalen Johnson is the primary reason behind their recent success, as he has risen to become a star player in the NBA.
The Eastern Conference has been exciting this season, with teams like the Detroit Pistons and the Toronto Raptors rising. Another team that deserves commendation is the Atlanta Hawks, who have a strong 12-8 record despite the absence of their star guard, Trae Young.
The Hawks’ driving force behind this successful run has been forward Jalen Johnson. Everyone knew he had all the physical tools to be a good NBA player, but he has exceeded expectations in the 2025-26 season. Now, he is a surefire lock for the All-Star game with how he is playing recently.
His efficient scoring is commendable, but head coach Quin Snyder is most impressed by his playmaking. The versatility is making Johnson the Hawks’ best player this season, which has been a role reserved for Young over the past few seasons.
The Hawks got another strong victory on Friday night, beating the Cleveland Cavaliers 130-123. Considering the Cavaliers were the preseason favorites to win the Eastern Conference, this is another huge result for the surging Hawks.
Who do you think is most likely to be traded, and where?
Johnson was once again the Hawks’ standout player, getting a triple-double of 29 points, 12 rebounds, and 12 assists. It was such an impressive performance from Johnson, as he proved he is the Hawks’ go-to player, and he can do everything.
Nickeil Alexander-Walker was amazing yet again, stepping up as the starting point guard after Young’s injury. He scored 30 points to lead the Hawks, as they managed to beat Donovan Mitchell’s 42-point night. With all those impressive performances, coach Snyder wanted to commend Johnson’s versatility as a big part of the Hawks’ win.
“You can tell his focus on those things. You’re always going to have games when you’re playing better than others for whatever reason. Your ability to weather those situations, whether it’s a game where you’re coming back… For us, Jalen’s playmaking ability is huge,” Snyder said after the win against Cleveland.
“Playing off two feet, I think it’s huge because the game slows down, the passes are more accurate, your reads a little bit better, being more in the rhythm. That’s part of the evolution, him getting there and not using athletic ability, but using his brain and skill. That’s really tough to develop.”
As the Hawks continue to win without Young, there are murmurs that he could be on the trade block. Many teams would love Young on their roster because he is an amazing offensive player.
He is an offensive engine that could be a driving force for any team. The Hawks can still utilize him as their primary ball-handler and playmaker, but Johnson’s growth is tough to ignore. While he is not on the trade block yet, the Hawks’ front office might have to make tough decisions soon.
Of course, it will be up to Snyder to help them coexist as the two foundational pieces. The Hawks don’t need to trade Young if he can prove he can lead the Hawks alongside Johnson. It will be a tough challenge, but Young has made a career out of proving his doubters wrong.
