When the Chicago Bulls initially traded their 2025 pick to the San Antonio Spurs, it was protected for two additional seasons if it was not conveyed during the designated draft. However, Chicago regained the rights to this pick through the Zach LaVine trade, giving them complete control over their future. This alleviates any concerns about losing the chance to draft a potential star to the Spurs.
Tre Johnson has the potential that teams are eager to find, even if they ended up missing out on a coveted top-three selection in the draft.

Tre Johnson is arguably the best scorer in the 2025 draft class. He’s an elite shooter at 6’6” with a high release point that makes him difficult to defend. Johnson’s versatile scoring consists of movement shooting, isolations, and cutting. He can also draw fouls. However, his improvement as a facilitator, defender, or rebounder will determine his potential as an NBA player. Teams interested in Johnson will immediately include him in their rotation as at least a corner shooter, but his defense will determine whether he stays in rotation.

One of the most dangerous offensive weapons in the 2025 NBA Draft class, Johnson has been fantastic as of late with production on offensive side of the ball.

Aside from their height difference, McCollum and Johnson share many similarities as players. McCollum shot 37.7% from three-point range in college, while Johnson is currently shooting 39%. Both players are comfortable creating their shots as long as it doesn’t disrupt the team’s offensive flow. Additionally, both are difficult to guard on due to their high release points. Overall, Johnson’s career trajectory could mirror McCollum’s as a high-level scorer who can handle the ball.
Tre Johnson can seamlessly fit alongside Josh Giddey as an off-ball scorer that Giddey can create offense for. As Matas Buzelis gains more on-ball responsibilities, Johnson will be able to focus on his strengths while potentially improving in other areas. Johnson’s height can help him counteract the physicality of the NBA, which can be challenging for many young players. Hopefully, the Bulls will condense their guard rotation this offseason, allowing Johnson to avoid playing either forward position.
