Raptors could be part of blockbuster Damian Lillard three-team trade

The Toronto Raptors have "expressed exploratory interest" in acquiring guard Tyler Herro, according to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype. The move would be part of a potential three-team trade that would send Portland Trail Blazers star Damian Lillard to the Miami Heat.

Herro, 23, has averaged 20-plus points in back-to-back seasons with the Heat. In 2022, the Kentucky product was named NBA Sixth Man of the Year. This past season, Herro moved into the starting lineup, starting all 67 games played.

The Blazers are "lukewarm" on Herro, per Chris Mannix of Sports, which obviously poses an issue for the Heat and their hunger to land Lillard. Herro is by far the most valuable trade chip on Miami's roster outside of Jimmy Butler or Bam Adebayo — both of whom are virtually untouchable.

With the arrival of No. 3 pick Scoot Henderson in Portland and the presence of young guards Shaedon Sharpe and Anfernee Simons already in-house, Herro would be an unnecessary addition. Thankfully, for Miami's sake, Herro would fill a need in Toronto.

The Raptors added Gradey Dick in the draft and Dennis Schröder in free agency this summer. Yet, Herro offers the type of proven perimeter shooting that Toronto's backcourt lost this offseason when point guard Fred VanVleet signed with the Houston Rockets.

Blazers general manager Joe Cronin has made it clear the team is in no rush to deal Lillard, as he seeks the best return possible for the franchise — even if a trade takes "months" to complete.

If Cronin wishes to cater to Lillard's desire to join the Heat, the best trade from Portland's point of view will almost certainly require a third team to take on Herro and his $120M contract.
