Raptors could dangle former top-three pick in trade talks

After trading away OG Anunoby and Pascal Siakam, the Toronto Raptors entered a full-scale rebuild. The idea was to begin constructing a roster centered around Scottie Barnes. Yet, while that rebuild is still in its infancy, it would appear the Raptors are already growing impatient.

In a June 6 report, NBA insider Marc Stein cited the Raptors as a potential candidate to make a run at Kevin Durant or Giannis Antetokounmpo should either become available this summer. Stein also noted that Toronto native RJ Barrett could be used as a salary-matching tool in any major deal.

"The Raptors...are generally expected to be active on this summer's trade market, which could establish RJ Barrett’s $27 million salary as a key element to any forthcoming salary cap math," Stein wrote. "Sources say Barrett was indeed discussed with New Orleans during the Raptors' trade conversations that ultimately landed Ingram from the Pelicans for Bruce Brown, Kelly Olynyk and one future first- and second-round pick."

A former No. 3 overall pick by the Knicks, Barrett joined the Raptors midway through the 2023-24 season. He was sent to his hometown team as part of the trade that saw Anunoby head to New York.

During his first full campaign with the Raptors, Barrett averaged 21.1 points, 6.3 rebounds and 5.4 assists. There would certainly be a market for his services, especially among contending teams.

Of course, Toronto is unlikely to part with Barrett for anything less than a superstar. It would make sense to part ways with him if the return was a player of Durant or Antetokounmpo's ilk. If not, the Raptors will surely be happy to move forward with Barrett. After all, he's only 24 years old and still has plenty of room to grow his game.

Pressure to succeed in a wide-open Eastern Conference could force the Raptors' hand, though, and if that happens, Barrett may be heading for the third NBA team of his young career.
