The Athletic reports that Toronto Raptors guard Jalen Harris has been dismissed and disqualified from the NBA for at least one full year for violating league rules as it pertains to the anti-drug program and drugs of abuse.
Harris, who just completed his rookie season, can apply for reinstatement next summer. He turns 23 years old in August and averaged 7.4 points, 1.4 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 13 regular-season games with the Raptors. He played on a two-way contract and would've hit restricted free agency before this development.
According to Sportsnet, marijuana and steroids do not fall under "drugs of abuse" and instead have their own classifications.
Raptors beat writer Blake Murphy explained Harris must first complete "treatment and aftercare prescribed" before he can apply for reinstatement. The Raptors will hold his rights if he's reinstated in 2022.
Most recently, Tyreke Evans was dismissed in 2019 and can reportedly apply for reinstatement this summer. Veterans earn an automatic two-year dismissal for such violations, while rookies are hit with one-year bans.
