The Toronto Raptors may be hoping to take advantage of what appears to be a Boston Celtics fire sale.
More specifically, the Raptors have spoken to the Celtics about a trade centered on Boston guard Derrick White, with Toronto offering its No. 9 overall draft pick as part of the proposal, per Brett Siegel of Clutch Points.
“As part of unexpected discussions held with the Celtics this week, sources say the Raptors created an offer based around the ninth pick in the 2025 NBA Draft,” Siegel wrote. “The expectation is that if Toronto was to swing a deal for White in the coming hours leading up to Wednesday’s draft, they would do so with the involvement of other teams as part of a larger, multi-team trade.”
An earlier report indicated the Celtics would only trade White for an “insurmountable package.” Perhaps that has changed since the trades of Jrue Holiday (Portland) and Kristaps Porzingis (Atlanta).
Interestingly, Siegel is among those who have reported that teams have also been calling the Celtics about star wing Jaylen Brown. The list, per Siegel, includes the Utah Jazz.
Meanwhile, White will make $28,100,000 next season. He averaged 16.4 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4.8 assists, 0.9 steals and 1.1 blocks this past season.
The Raptors own the Nos. 9 and 39 overall selections in the draft. The Celtics own the Nos. 28 and 32 picks.
“Toronto has signaled to teams around the league that they are looking to make a big splash in the trade market to increase their playoff perception in what will be a significantly weaker Eastern Conference during the 2025-26 season,” Siegel wrote.
