Raptors rumors: Toronto offering No. 9 pick for Derrick White

The Toronto Raptors could be eyeing a trade for Boston Celtics guard Derrick White.

The Raptors have emerged as a real suitor for White before the 2025 NBA Draft, according to ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel:

“As part of unexpected discussions held with the Celtics this week, sources say the Raptors created an offer based around the ninth pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. The expectation is that if Toronto was to swing a deal for White in the coming hours leading up to Wednesday’s draft, they would do so with the involvement of other teams as part of a larger, multi-team trade.”

The Celtics have gone through a total reset to get under the second apron after trading key championship pieces in Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis.

Boston is also taking incoming calls on Jaylen Brown and White, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

White is a tremendous 3-and-D player who was a big reason why the Celtics captured the 2024 NBA Championship.

He’s a terrific shooter and defender who’s in the prime of his career. He would serve as a great fit in a starting lineup with Scottie Barnes and Brandon Ingram, with his ability to space the floor and defend at a high level.

The Raptors forking away the No. 9 pick in this situation would be significant, but the team is looking to be competitive next season.

The Celtics will be taking a step back with Jayson Tatum sidelined all of next season with an Achilles injury. Also, the Milwaukee Bucks won’t have Damian Lillard, who also suffered an Achilles injury, and the Indiana Pacers will be without Tyrese Haliburton, who tore his Achilles as well. The opportunity is there for Toronto to try and compete.

The Raptors would likely have to include RJ Barrett in a deal like this as well for salary purposes. Toronto is reportedly shopping Barrett this summer.

A deal like this going down hours before the draft is unlikely, but it’s still worth monitoring.

Derik Queen projected to Raptors in Bleacher Report’s post-finals mock draft

If the Toronto Raptors do keep their pick, they could end up drafting a big man.

In ESPN’s latest mock draft, they have the Raptors taking Derik Queen from Maryland.

Dereck Lively II acknowledges Mavericks landing Cooper Flagg was ‘insane’

DALLAS — Dallas Mavericks center Dereck Lively II hosted a special edition Mavs Academy Hoop Camp on Sunday in Dallas. Over 100 young basketball players attended to learn from Mavs Academy coaches and Lively. After the event, the 21-year-old center took some time to speak with reporters. Lively discussed the event and was also asked about the Mavericks landing the first overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, which ended up being Cooper Flagg. “It was an insane moment,” Lively told reporters. “Grateful for it. We welcome in Coop with open arms. You know, I called him earlier today. And he’s always having a smile on his face, always cracking a joke. “So I’m making sure that he’s feeling as comfortable as possible. Giving him any little detail or any little thing to get him by because whenever I was in his position, I remember how frightened I was and I was 19, he’s 18.” Lively and Flagg both attended Duke. They do have a pre-existing relationship, something that could add an additional level of comfort for Flagg as he transitions to the NBA. “I’ve probably known him for a couple years now, at least two or three years,” the Mavericks center said. “And he’s just been the same, smiling, cracking joke kid as I’ve always known. I’m glad that he’s been able to still be a person, not having too much of the spotlight just rain on him. So no matter if he’s in the gym, no matter if he’s coming by the house, he always just has a smile on his face. “He’s always just being Coop.” Lively is one of the better young centers in the NBA. Injuries have limited him during his first two seasons in the league, but he’s displayed signs of potential while on the floor. Flagg and Lively are included in the Mavs’ long-term vision. For now, they will both help Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving (once he returns from injury) lead Dallas to a possible deep postseason run.

Brewers issue update on Jackson Chourio rehab timeline

Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Jackson Chourio was tearing it up in July before he strained his hamstring legging out a triple. He was placed on the injured list, and it only got worse from there. Less than 24 hours later, manager Pat Murphy said Chourio would be out beyond the 10-day minimum and possibly at least a month. On Saturday, beat reporter Curt Hogg shed another tidbit of light on the slugger’s timetable. It’s not necessarily worse news, but Hogg’s update probably does not illuminate much. Fans already knew Chourio was going to be out a while after Friday’s report, so this latest info isn’t surprising. It isn’t all that encouraging, either. It certainly suggests no expedited return schedule. Not to make assumptions, but the emphasis on the location of the damage versus evaluating its severity seems to indicate the Brewers are just hoping Chourio avoided a worse-case scenario. In that case, caution would indeed be first in the order of operations. Only after ascertaining clarity would it make sense to seriously estimate a recovery timetable. That he won’t be ready to immediately resume baseball workouts further points to a slow, methodical recovery process. For however long he remains out, the lineup will miss him badly. Chourio’s 17 home runs rank second on the team behind Christian Yelich, as do his 67 RBI. His .786 OPS leads the offense among qualified hitters. In 90 at-bats in July, he hit .367/.408/.600. The Brewers are resilient everywhere, but without one of their few genuine power threats and hottest bats, plus an everyday outfielder, they are courting a potential offensive slump. The most fans can hope for from Chourio is that he returns fully healthy by the first week of September. Until then, Blake Perkins and trade pickup Brandon Lockridge should see plenty of playing time while Yelich takes more reps in the outfield after getting most of his at-bats this season as the designated hitter.

Familiar face gets attention in Packers training camp: ‘I always wanted to be back’

The Green Bay Packers have decisions to make soon, with the 53-man roster cut deadline on the horizon. Among those hoping to make it to Week 1 of the 2025 NFL season on the team’s main roster is tight end John FitzPatrick, who reunited with the Packers after signing a one-year contract worth $1.5M in April. Green Bay initially signed him to the active roster in 2024 following a practice squad stint with the Atlanta Falcons. He played nine games for the Packers in the 2024 NFL campaign, but did not produce significantly on the field, having also seen just 32% of offensive snaps. He had a catch on a single target for two receiving yards last season. TE loving his Green Bay Packers comeback Competing for a spot behind Tucker Kraft and Luke Musgrave, the 25-year-old FitzPatrick had his moments on the field on Friday with a sliding catch from a Malik Willis pass before scoring a touchdown. FitzPatrick is not hiding his true feelings about being back with Green Bay, as he continues to prove himself to the team. “I always wanted to be back here,” FitzPatrick said, per Wes Hodkiewicz of the Packers’ official website. “I really love it here. I love the people here. When the opportunity presented itself, it was really a no-brainer. It was nice just being able to go through the whole offseason program. The OTAs and the lifting, all the meetings and practices, I think has just helped me a ton.” FitzPatrick entered the pros in 2022, when the Falcons took him off the board in the sixth round (213th overall) of the NFL draft.

'Morphed Into A Different Player': Steelers Fans Get Inspiring Update On Key Defensive Piece Heading Into 2025

The Pittsburgh Steelers are known for always having a highly capable defense. The expectations for the unit are sky-high heading into the 2025 season as it will be the fourth consecutive year that Pittsburgh is rostering the highest-paid defense in the league. The group is headlined by stars at every level, with some of the most notable being TJ Watt, Cam Heyward, and Jalen Ramsey. However, in order to have the best defense in the league, Pittsburgh is going to need to see some of the younger guys stepping up. Someone to keep an eye on is inside linebacker Payton Wilson. Wilson was one of the more exciting picks for the Steelers during the 2024 NFL Draft, and he did not disappoint during his rookie year. He tallied 78 total tackles, an interception, and he also recovered a fumble and returned it for a touchdown. Fans are looking for Wilson to have another successful season, which probably includes taking another step forward. Team insider Mark Kaboly has noticed a difference in Wilson while being in Latrobe, which he posted to social media. "You know that big jump that Tomlin talks about from being a rookie to being a second-year player being significant?" Kaboly asked. "It’s real, at least for Payton Wilson, and it's likely not in the area you were expecting. Wilson has morphed into a different football player, more than just on the field. A guy who barely spoke last year, Wilson has been one of the more vocal players on the defense, which already has some big personalities. The trash talking, the vocal leadership, and the intensity have been off the charts through the first week, and it’s been relentless. I can’t admit that we would see that from Wilson this early in his career, but here we are." It seems as though Wilson is trying to take on more of a leadership role during his second season with the team, and he is also trying to make more of an impact with his play. He played well as a rookie, but some fans are expecting him to take a major leap in 2025. This could propel him into Pro Bowl status, or something close. Wilson has been extremely vocal throughout camp, and he has even been taking shots at some of his own teammates in the media. Kaboly has heard him down on the field between the whistle, which is something Pittsburgh needs as a part of its defense. Kaboly believes this is all a result of Wilson being more confident and comfortable in his role. "All that means to me is that he’s much more comfortable in his role – a role where he doesn’t want to come off the field for any reason," Kaboly wrote. During the 2024 season, Wilson played a decent amount, but he only started four total games. Elandon Roberts would usually be the other linebacker next to Patrick Queen when it seemed like a running situation, while Wilson would be on the field in obvious passing scenarios. Wilson wants to be a three-down linebacker in 2025, which is certainly possible. Steelers' Payton Wilson Is Not Lacking Confidence Wilson is flying high heading into 2025, and rightfully so. He has come out and point blank said that he is one of the best coverage linebackers in the world, which is something he will be looking to prove once the regular season kicks off. He is going to need to be a key contributor for Pittsburgh if they want to be the best defense in the league, especially if he plans on being on the field in all scenarios.
