Rare Spurs gaming event features obvious Victor Wembanyama connection

The “Alien” effect is in full force for the San Antonio Spurs. Even without Victor Wembanyama.

Featuring Alienware and a chance to go head to head against an important member of the team, the franchise announced “Game at The Rock,” a free day of gaming and basketball at The Rock at La Cantera on Sunday, May 19. Players of all ages and skill levels are invited to attend the event, which is set to start at 11 a.m. CT on Frost Plaza. Attendees can participate in free play and watch Spurs point guard Tre Jones, gaming influencer SypherPK and members of professional e-sports Team Liquid compete. Gamers can enter a raffle onsite for prizes and a chance to play against Jones and Team Liquid later in the day, with the competition streamed on the big screen.

Sanctioned gaming events aren’t the norm for the Silver and Black and it’s no coincidence that the competition will include Alienware equipment.

We’re going on two years since LeBron James called Wemby an “Alien.” For the very reasons that James used that description, the 7-foot-4 Spurs generational talent enjoys the moniker. During a rookie season that ranks among the best in NBA history, Wembanyama reiterated that he appreciates the label, especially considering “unicorn” seems to be the go-to phrase for versatile players with a unique skill set.

Nike has since launched an alien themed campaign around the Rookie of the Year, including releasing two related commercials in the last month and a half.

This weekend will mark the second straight in which the Spurs organization will hold an event featuring a universal theme. In presenting the French phenom with the ROY trophy, the franchise held the ceremony at a local Education Center and Planetarium.

During the corresponding press conference, Wemby, in answering what he had spoken with students about earlier that day, described dark matter. It’s a answer that has since gone viral on X thanks to a ClutchPoints post.

Spurs ramp up use of new headquarters

While Sunday’s Spurs event will center on gaming, interested fans can also participate in basketball competitions and skills challenges led by Spurs Sports Academy coaches. Participation, like the parking, is free and open to players of all skills and will not require registration. The franchise’s long time mascot, Coyote, will make an appearance as will DaBull. Food trucks, prizes, a DJ and a Spurs merchandise truck will all be on location and available. There will also be a meet and greet with Team Liquid and SypherPK.

The Rock at La Cantera and Frost Plaza are on the campus of the Spurs headquarters, which opened last year. Spurs, Sports & Entertainment broke ground on the multi-phase $500 million legacy project that extends across 45 acres and is home to the new Victory Capital Performance Center, a state-of-the-art training facility for the Spurs, a 22-acre park, and Frost Plaza, a community-centered outdoor space. Future phases will feature a human performance research center and space for medical, hospitality and office use. The SS&E investor group is led by Managing Partner Peter J. Holt.
