PHOENIX — Phoenix Suns rookie Ryan Dunn set a new career high of 26 points as they defeated the San Antonio Spurs 117-98 in their home finale, snapping an eight game losing streak.
Led by Dunn, five Suns scored in double figures. Bradley Beal and Devin Booker, who didn’t play in the fourth quarter, followed Dunn with 21 and 18 points respectively. Grayson Allen added 15 points and Collin Gillespie scored 13.
With the season in the rearview, at least for the moment as Phoenix heads up to Sacramento to take on the Kings in their regular season finale on Sunday, many questions arise about the future of the team, roster, coaching staff and front office. The offseason will certainly be more entertaining than what came before it.
Ryan Dunn set a new career high 24 points after scoring 12 in the third quarter, leading Phoenix in scoring en route to extending their lead by nearly 30 points, 92-64.
Alongside Dunn, Bradley Beal scored 21 points through three quarters, adding four rebounds and six assists to his stat line. Devin Booker followed with 18 points but the game thus far was highlighted by team rebounding and spreading the ball around. All three of Phoenix’s leading scorers had more than five assists and Dunn had nine rebounds.
Julian Champagnie led San Antonio with 20 points on 7-of-15 shooting from the field and 5-of-7 from beyond the arc. Stephon Castle stuffed the stat sheet with 14 points, four rebounds and eight assists ahead of the final quarter.
Behind eight Bradley Beal points in the second quarter, Phoenix was able to take control of the game and take a 53-47 lead into halftime, holding the Spurs to just 14 points in the period.
The Suns had three players in double figures in the half, led by Beal with 13 points and four assists on 5-of-10 shooting. Ryan Dunn and Devin Booker followed with 12 and 11 points respectively.
Julian Champagnie led the game with 15 points after scoring 10 of them in the first quarter. Stephon Castle, who also got out to a hot start, was held to zero points in the quarter, keeping his total at 12 ahead of halftime.
Rookies Ryan Dunn and Stephon Castle dueled in the first quarter of this low stakes game as Castle’s 12 points topped Dunn’s 10 to give San Antonio an early lead, 33-28.
It was evident the gameplan was to get Dunn going offensively. He shot the ball nearly every time he got it and led the Suns with nine shot attempts in the opening period. Devin Booker followed with nine points on 4-of-6 shooting.
Castle’s 12 points led the Spurs but he was joined in the double-digits club by Julian Champagnie, who had 10 points on 3-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc.
Kevin Durant (left ankle sprain) and Nick Richards (right elbow inflammation) were both out for Phoenix. Coach Mike Budenholzer said pregame that Durant would officially be out for the remainder of the season as they travel to Sacramento to take on the Kings on Sunday.
For San Antonio, De’Aaron Fox (left finger tendon surgery), Victor Wembanyama (right shoulder deep vein thrombosis), Keldon Johnson (left ankle soreness), Riley Minix (left shoulder labrum surgery), Jeremy Sochan (low back inflammation) and Devin Vassell (left ankle soreness) were all out.
