The Los Angeles Clippers don't have a lot of draft capital to work with in the near future.
They don't own a first rounder in 2026 or 2028. Their pick in this year's draft was a swap with the Oklahoma City Thunder. They still owe pick swaps in 2027 and 2029.
That draft capital issue makes it especially important for the Clippers to make the picks they do have count.
This season, they are looking at picking very late in round one with the pick still unassigned as we wait to see how the Thunder finish their season, but ESPN's Jonathan Givony and Jeremy Woo see an option for the Clippers who could fit them well.
In their most recent mock draft, they predicted the Clippers would select Washington State small forward Cedric Coward.
Coward's path to the NBA Draft has been a bit unique.
His college career began at Division III Willamette where he earned All-Conference honors.
From there, he transferred to Eastern Washington and made an immediate impact for the mid-major school.
In his first Division I season, Coward averaged 7.3 points and 5.6 rebounds per game.
Then he really made his mark in his second season with the Eagles.
In year two at Eastern Washington, Coward averaged 15.4 points per game while shooting 56.5% from the field and 38.3% from three. He also added 6.7 rebounds and a steal per game on his way to All-Big Sky First Team honors.
Coward transferred again after his breakout season, this time staying in the state of Washington as he headed to Washington State.
Unfortunately, he only got to play six games for the Cougars because of a shoulder injury that ended his season.
Before the injury, Coward was averaging 17.7 points and 7 rebounds per game and shooting 40% from three.
Following the season, he decided to transfer to Duke, but still has his name in the draft.
He still hasn't been cleared for contact, but his draft stock has been on the rise since the combine.
While he wouldn't solve the Clippers' largest need, which is a starting power forward, he could be the answer to another one of their problems.
The Clippers need another dependable scorer. They finished 20th in the league in scoring this past season and could trade Bogdan Bogdanovic, which would make their offense even worse.
Coward is a bit unproven, but has been able to score at every level he's played at so far.
This late in round one, it's hard to find guys that are going to make a big impact for your squad, but Coward could be somebody who is with taking a shot on for the Clippers.
