Report: Clippers interested in former All-Star point guards

The Los Angeles Clippers are reportedly interested in adding another future Hall of Fame point guard to their roster.

The Clippers are potential suitors for multi-time All-Stars Chris Paul and Kyle Lowry, according to NBA correspondent Marc Stein.

“The Clippers, I’m told, should be added to the list of teams that could emerge as a suitor for potential free agent Chris Paul. … I nonetheless heard this week that Paul and Kyle Lowry, whose free agency is looming after finishing last season in Philadelphia, are veteran guards said to interest the Clippers,” wrote Stein on his Substack report published Sunday.

Paul played six seasons for the Clippers from 2011-17. He made five All-Star teams and earned three first-team All-NBA nods during his time with LAC.

Stein added that the Clippers’ chance of landing Paul does come with a caveat. Paul could potentially be off the free-agent market altogether if the Golden State Warriors decide to keep him.

Paul’s $30 million salary for the 2024-25 season is only partially guaranteed. But given Paul’s declining play and the Warriors’ dire salary-cap situation, Golden State may be hard-pressed to hold onto Paul next year.

The Clippers may also be waiting on what Russell Westbrook opts to do this offseason. The former MVP has a $4 million player option that he must exercise before the end of next month.

The Clippers have a lot of questions to answer in the coming months. The team signed Kawhi Leonard to a long-term extension. But the team is still on the negotiating table for potential deals to re-sign free agent stars Paul George and James Harden.
