A Western Conference team is keeping tabs on Darius Garland, and it’s one with a glaring need at point guard.
According to Grant Afseth of DallasHoopsJournal, the Kings have interest in Garland as they search for a long-term solution following last year’s trade of De’Aaron Fox.
Afseth reports that league perception is Garland may eventually want the chance to run his own team again, something he hasn’t fully been able to do alongside Donovan Mitchell in Cleveland.
There’s been no actual indication of that from Garland, of course. He appears to enjoy playing alongside Mitchell.
The Kings’ situation is straightforward. They need a lead guard. Sacramento sits near the bottom of the West and has struggled to establish any offensive continuity. Garland would immediately change that.
He is averaging 16.9 points and 6.9 assists while shooting 36.5 percent from three. He is earning $39.4 million this season and is coming off offseason toe surgery, which may help explain some of the early inefficiency.
The Cavs have been uneven after last season’s 64-18 finish and currently sit at 19-16. While Evan Mobley and Mitchell are viewed as untouchable, rival teams are monitoring Cleveland closely.
Garland does not have a no-trade clause, and if the Cavs keep searching for answers, calls like Sacramento’s are likely to keep coming.
