The Los Angeles Lakers believe they would be firmly in the mix if Giannis Antetokounmpo ever asks out of Milwaukee.
According to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, team sources say the Lakers see the appeal in Antetokounmpo and view themselves as being on a “very short list” of destinations should the Milwaukee Bucks star request a trade.
One Western Conference executive described the two-time MVP as the “big prize” Los Angeles hopes to pursue if he becomes available this offseason.
“The Lakers, team sources told ESPN, obviously see the appeal in Antetokounmpo and believe they would be one of the teams on a very short list if the Bucks star asks for a trade out of Milwaukee,” Dave reported.

That scenario, however, remains conditional. Antetokounmpo has publicly reiterated his commitment to the Bucks, and Milwaukee can still attempt to reshape its roster this summer before he becomes eligible to sign an extension on Oct. 1. A trade is far from inevitable.
Still, the Lakers are positioning themselves for the possibility. Just in case things go south in Milwaukee. After a quiet trade deadline in which they moved Gabe Vincent for Luke Kennard, Los Angeles preserved long-term flexibility rather than sacrificing assets for short-term upgrades.
Chatter from around the league observers note that such a pick-heavy offer could appeal more to the Bucks than proposals centered on established players, such as those potentially available from teams like New York.
While the Lakers remain very much inclined toward Antetokounmpo, Dončić is crucially aligned with the organization’s long-term strategy.
A source familiar with his thinking told ESPN that Dončić supported the Lakers’ disciplined deadline approach and has not pressured the front office to rush into a superstar acquisition while James remains on the roster. Instead, he has endorsed patience and flexibility.
Dončić has also spoken positively about the Lakers’ infrastructure, calling the organization “legendary” and emphasizing his belief in its championship foundation.
Antetokounmpo, for his part, recently reiterated that he is committed to the Bucks. But it’s only a matter of time if he goes on to explore other ventures.
