Report: Los Angeles Lakers Locker Room Confident Current Roster is Built for the Playoffs

The Los Angeles Lakers supposedly have big plans ahead of Thursday’s trade deadline. However, given their current status, they might not find any takers for Gabe Vincent, Dalton Knecht, Jared Vanderbilt, or Maxi Kleber.

In addition, there’s some talk about LeBron James’ questionable future with the team. LBJ and the Lakers are reportedly open to parting ways once this season is done. That’s been the news circulating among the team recently. But what about roster upgrades as they vie for a top-six finish in the second half of the season? It looks like LA is confident that they will fare much better in the 2026 playoffs.

“People inside the [Los Angeles Lakers] locker room and opposing talent evaluators say they’re built more for playoff basketball than regular-season play. They have top-end offensive talent that can win stretches of games with their greatness, and even in a league where depth seems to matter more than ever,” according to a report from Dan Woike from The Athletic.

Those top-end offensive talents are Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves, and, to an extent, the 41-year-old LeBron James. The trio could no doubt win some playoff games just by their talent alone.

However, the bench production is arguably LA’s biggest flaw. They need to address that. They don’t necessarily need to shoot for the stars, but they need improvement on that end.

The Los Angeles Lakers Want LeBron To Take A Pay Cut

If the Lakers stay put at the trade deadline, they are thinking ahead of roster flexibility in the offseason. Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves are the future. But what about LeBron James? LA still wants to retain him, but at a reduced price.

“If he’s going to play for another season, then how much money is he willing to play for? Because the Lakers almost certainly are going to ask him to take a pay cut, potentially a significant one. Would he be comfortable doing that to help the team build out, similar to what Dirk Nowitzki did in Dallas at the end of his career?” according to a report from Brian Windhorst.

If the Los Angeles Lakers win a title this season, there’s no way LeBron James jumps to another team.
