Dallas Mavericks star Anthony Davis underwent a procedure to repair a detached retina that he suffered during the season, according to Shams Charania of ESPN. Davis is expected to be a full-go once training camp begins.

Charania said that Davis played through multiple hits to the face this past season. He played in 42 games with the Los Angeles Lakers and nine with the Mavericks.

Anthony Davis was part of the shocking Lakers-Mavericks trade that sent him to Dallas and Luka Doncic to Los Angeles. The trade was made in early February, and Davis missed 18 games due to a left adductor strain. In nine games with the Mavericks, Davis averaged 20 points, 10.1 rebounds and 2.2 blocks.

When the season ended, Davis shared an emotional message to Mavericks fans. “I’m just very appreciative that I get to play the game of basketball. Appreciative to Dallas, the fan base and my teammates for accepting me and welcoming me with open arms, given the situation. It’s part of basketball. You can’t control what goes on,” Davis said in April, per Mike Curtis of the Dallas Morning News.

Anthony Davis is ‘appreciative for the city of Dallas’

“The injury happened and I tried to do everything I could to get back on the floor to finish the season and try to carry us into the playoffs. I’m just appreciative.”

Davis continued: “Obviously, it’s a lot of emotion. I know it’s not directed towards me. The city loved the guy. Get rid of a guy. New guy comes in, yet they want to embrace you and they’re thankful for you. It still stings. I’m just thankful and appreciative for the city of Dallas and the fans for welcoming me and Max (Christie) to the new situation.”

Davis has put together a Hall-of-Fame career during his 13 seasons in the NBA. He has been selected as an All-Star 10 times, named to the All-NBA First Team four times, selected to the All-NBA Defensive First Team three times, led the NBA in blocks three times and helped the Lakers win the NBA title in 2020.
