According to NBA insider Shams Charania of ESPN, the Dallas Mavericks want to sign Kyrie Irving to a new three-year deal.

Irving has a player option worth $43,962,963 for next season. The Mavericks want Irving to decline that player option so they can sign him to a new deal.

Irving tore the ACL in his left knee on March 3. He’s expected to return in January 2026.

“The expectation around the Dallas Mavericks, Kyrie Irving, is that he will play a good chunk of next season,” Charania said. “And there is optimism that he will be back by January. And he’s got before that a $45 million player option. That’s the next situation that Nico Harrison, the Mavericks will have to deal with. And the goal for the Mavericks has been to rip up his player option and give him a three-year deal, potentially to align him with Nico Harrison’s three years and Anthony Davis‘ three years.”

Irving appeared in 50 games this season for the Mavericks, who traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers. The one-time NBA champion averaged 24.7 points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.6 assists while shooting 47.3% from the field, 40.1% from beyond the arc and 91.6% from the free-throw line.

Irving has played for the Cleveland Cavaliers, Boston Celtics, Brooklyn Nets and Mavericks. He’s a nine-time All-Star with career averages of 23.7 points, 4.1 rebounds and 5.6 assists.

Irving helped the Cavaliers win the 2016 championship against the Golden State Warriors. He hit the game-winning shot in Game 7 over Warriors guard Stephen Curry

The Mavericks beat the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday in the 9-10 play-in game. They have the defeat the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday to make the 2025 playoffs.

If Dallas beats Memphis, Jason Kidd’s group will face the Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round. OKC had the best record in the NBA during the regular season at 68-14.
