Report: NBA considering Christmas start to 2020-21 season

The NBA's Board of Governors is meeting Friday to discuss the upcoming season after the 2019-20 campaign was finished at Walt Disney World in Orlando.

According to ESPN's Brian Windhorst and Zach Lowe, the league is considering starting the 2020-21 campaign as soon as possible. Playing fewer than 82 games and not waiting for fans to be permitted are among the possibilities for the upcoming season.

The league also is considering starting the season on Christmas Day, which is about two months away, Windhorst and Lowe add. While that may not be feasible, others have been pushing for a start on Martin Luther King Jr. Day in mid-January.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver is reportedly planning to give teams eight weeks notice ahead of the start of the season, so we may learn the official start date sooner rather than later.

After deciding on a start date, the NBA will meet more challenges of actually designing the season schedule. Things like how many games, if fans will be allowed to attend, COVID-19 restrictions and much more will need to be ironed out.

Simply put, the league still has a lot of work to do before next season can begin. The 2020 NBA Draft is set for Nov. 18, with free agency to follow. Before we know it, teams will be back on the court.
