Report: Pistons would 'welcome' Chauncey Billups as assistant GM

Chauncey Billups is one of the most beloved Pistons of all-time, helping Detroit win its only championship in the 21st century.

Now, Billups may help restore his former team to its glory days. Omari Sankofa II of the Detroit Free Press reports that the former point guard is a candidate for the team's assistant general manager position.

"The organization would also welcome a reunion with Chauncey Billups, who has maintained that he is interested in being hired only as general manager, according to a source," Sankofa wrote. "The Pistons would prefer to hire Billups, who has no NBA executive experience, as an assistant, where he could learn the ins and outs of working in a front office."

It remains to be seen if the Pistons and Billups can strike up a deal that would please both sides. After all, Billups sounds like he is only interested in a GM position, while the Pistons may only be willing to offer him a job as assistant GM.

If Billups is unwilling to come on as assistant GM, the Pistons may end up hiring his former teammate Tayshaun Prince. According to Sankofa, Prince, who is currently the vice president of basketball affairs for the Memphis Grizzlies, is a candidate for the position.

"The goal is to find someone light on experience who could eventually grow into a larger role within the organization," Sankofa wrote.

Billups was previously interviewed by the Cleveland Cavaliers to become the team's GM but he rejected the team's reported lowball offer.
