Report: Ricky Rubio expected to return to Cavaliers next season

Ricky Rubio was in the midst of a spectacular 2021-22 NBA campaign with the Cleveland Cavaliers when a season-ending ACL injury took him out of action.

The 31-year-old was then traded to the Indiana Pacers in the Caris Levert trade.

Given that Rubio is an unrestricted free agent this summer, many have wondered about what the future holds for him.

This week, an answer emerged.

According to Chris Fedor of cleveland.com, there is a decent chance that Rubio will simply return to Cleveland.

“The hole at point guard is reserved for a stabilizing veteran — Ricky Rubio, Delon Wright or Tyus Jones, among others,” he wrote.

“Rubio’s relationship with the organization increases the chances of returning, with one source maintaining that it’s ‘highly likely.’”

Last season, Rubio averaged 13.1 points, 4.1 rebounds, 6.6 assists and 1.7 steals for the Cavs in 34 games. He obviously still has a ton left in the tank, presuming he can stay healthy.

It will be interesting to see where things go from here. Last season, Rubio expressed dissatisfaction with Cleveland on several occasions, and acknowledged that there was a legit championship contender he had interest in.

Given that Rubio is now in the twilight of his career, nobody would blame for him for ring-chasing.

Where will Rubio ultimately play in 2022-23? Time will tell.
