Report: Some Within Mavericks Believe Knicks Will Not Ask To Interview Jason Kidd

According to Marc Stein of The Stein Line, there is a belief among some within the Dallas Mavericks organization that the New York Knicks will ultimately decide against asking permission to interview Jason Kidd

Kidd has two years left on his contract with the Mavericks.

“There is a belief among some within the Mavericks’ organization that the Knicks will ultimately decide against taking the step of asking,” Stein wrote. “As I reported Saturday, I have likewise heard from a few well-placed skeptics who believe that the Knicks would be immediately shot down if they do ask.”

Kidd has coached the Brooklyn Nets, Milwaukee Bucks and Mavericks, compiling a record of 362-339 in the regular season and 31-33 in the playoffs. The Hall of Famer played for the Knicks in 2012-13.

New York is interested in Kidd after firing Tom Thibodeau. The Knicks made the conference finals this year for the first time since 2000, losing to the Indiana Pacers in six games.

Thibodeau was hired by the Knicks in 2020. He went 226-174 in the regular season and 24-23 in the postseason and won the 2021 Coach of the Year Award.

Stein, who is probably the best reporter to trust when it comes to Mavericks news, doesn’t think Kidd is secretly angling for the Knicks job.

“I personally don’t,” Stein wrote. “He is particularly close to Mavericks stars Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving. He and his family are very settled in Dallas. And, as covered in last Friday’s piece, Kidd has been operating as the Mavericks’ spokesman on All Things Flagg since they won the draft lottery on May 12 … expressing his excitement about getting the chance to coach Flagg in recent interview appearances on The Dan Patrick Show, our DLLS Mavs podcast for the ALLCITY Network and two other outlets in recent weeks.”

Dallas missed the playoffs this year after making the NBA Finals last year. Nico Harrison traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in February, a move Kidd was not happy with.

The Mavericks did win the 2025 NBA Draft Lottery. They will select Duke’s Cooper Flagg with the first overall pick in this year’s draft.
