According to Jake Fischer of The Stein Line, the Minnesota Timberwolves contacted an Eastern Conference team to help facilitate a Kevin Durant trade in February.
The Phoenix Suns wound up not trading Durant, who has one year left on his contract.
“League sources say Minnesota indeed made serious trade inquiries for Durant before the Feb. 6 trade deadline, contacting at least one Eastern Conference club about functioning as a facilitator to help two luxury tax teams that had strayed beyond the second apron combine on a massive in-season maneuver,” Fischer wrote.
The Suns, who missed the playoffs this year, are widely expected to trade Durant this offseason. KD has won only one postseason series since getting traded by the Brooklyn Nets to Phoenix in 2023.
Minnesota made the conference finals again this year. Anthony Edwards and Co. lost to the Dallas Mavericks in five games last year and fell to the Oklahoma City Thunder in five games this year.
The Timberwolves need another “alpha” next to Edwards to win it all, which is why sources told Hoops Wire that Minnesota is expected to pursue a Durant trade again this offseason.
Durant and Edwards are close. They were teammates on Team USA last summer. Edwards has said multiple times that Durant is his favorite player of all time.
Durant turns 37 in the fall. He averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.2 assists for the Suns this season while shooting 52.7% from the field, 43.0% from 3 and 83.9% from the free-throw line.
One of the top players in NBA history, Durant has career averages of 27.2 points, 7.0 rebounds and 4.4 assists. He’s a two-time champion, a two-time Finals MVP, a one-time MVP and a four-time scoring champion.
A future Hall of Famer, Durant doesn’t have a no-trade clause in his contract, but he’s interested in playing for the Timberwolves, sources said.
