Report: Timberwolves not willing to include D'Angelo Russell in Ben Simmons trade talks

The Minnesota Timberwolves are reportedly interested in Ben Simmons.

According to The Athletic's Jon Krawczynski and Danny Leroux, the Timberwolves are likely to be in the mix for several players on the trade block, including the Philadelphia 76ers guard. However, Minnesota has no intention of making D'Angelo Russell part of any trade package.

The Timberwolves reportedly view Russell as a crucial part of their core and "want to keep it that way."

While Simmons is a three-time All-Star and one of the best defensive players in the NBA, he is coming off a hideous playoff run that has led to speculation he could be moved this summer. The 24-year-old even took the blame for the Sixers' second-round playoff exit, saying, "There's a lot of things that I need to work on."

Despite his struggles, 76ers head coach Doc Rivers said earlier this month that he wants Simmons back next season. That, of course, does not mean a trade is off the table.

According to Bleacher Report's Jason Dumas, Philly has "fielded offers" for Simmons and recently turned down one from the Indiana Pacers that included Malcolm Brogdon and a first-round pick.

Sixers general manager Elton Brand also reportedly met with Timberwolves president of basketball operations Gersson Rosas at the NBA combine and discussed a Simmons trade, according to Dane Moore of Blue Wire.

While Simmons has some clear offensive deficiencies, that likely wouldn't matter if the Timberwolves are able to hold on to Russell, Karl-Anthony Towns and Anthony Edwards.

Russell, Towns and Edwards are strong offensive players, and adding Simmons would give Minnesota a solid playmaker and defensive stalwart moving forward.

The Timberwolves have missed the playoffs the last three seasons and have just one playoff appearance over the last 17 years. Adding Simmons could get them back to the postseason for the first time since the 2017-18 campaign.
