It’s been all positives this offseason for the Atlanta Hawks.
New general manager Onsi Saleh has announced his presence to the rest of the league, acquiring several pieces in free agency that put the Hawks near the top of a wide open Eastern Conference. The headliner was Kristaps Porzingis, but Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Luke Kennard also added some pivotal defense and shooting on the wing that Atlanta lacked a season ago.
Saleh made some magic happen on draft night as well, when he landed an unprotected first round pick from the Pelicans just for moving back 10 spots, where the club selected Asa Newell 23rd overall. The Hawks are now set up to compete right now and have a wide open window for the future, which has understandably been an exciting development for star point guard Trae Young.
All reports suggest Young is ecstatic with Atlanta’s moves, some of which he helped come to fruition through recruiting. However, there is a looming cloud that’s slowly moving in over the organization.
Young is entering the final year of his contract and is eligible for a max extension. The same extension De’Aaron Fox recently signed with the Spurs for four years and $229 million. A serious case could be made that Young is the more accomplished player than Fox. But to this point, the Hawks have not offered Young a max contract, which has caused some disappointment.

Several NBA insiders have suggested the Hawks should try to get Trae Young locked into a contract that is not for the max, but it takes two to tango in these negotiations. With Fox getting a max contract earlier this week from the Spurs, it’s hard to imagine Young will want anything less unless he’s simply doing the organization a solid.
