As the NBA buyout market begins to take shape following the trade deadline, Lonzo Ball has quickly surfaced as one of the more intriguing names available.
According to Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints, two Western Conference contenders have separated themselves from the pack, with the Denver Nuggets and Golden State Warriors emerging as serious suitors for the veteran guard.
Ball, 28, became available after the Cleveland Cavaliers traded him to the Utah Jazz and subsequently waived him. His season in Cleveland never found traction, and his offensive struggles ultimately led to his being pushed out of the rotation.

Both teams are looking to add an experienced ball-handler in their backcourt.
However, in 35 appearances, the star point guard averaged 4.6 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 1.3 steals in just over 20 minutes per game while shooting 31 percent below from the field.
Despite those numbers, Ball’s appeal on the buyout market is rooted in skill sets that don’t always show up cleanly in box scores. When healthy, he remains a capable ball-handler with strong defensive instincts and a willingness to move the ball.
Both Denver and Golden State are seeking experienced backcourt help, particularly someone who can stabilize second units and provide connective playmaking.
That said, the Nuggets have an open roster spot and championship aspirations, but minutes are harder to come by. Ball’s shooting inefficiency could limit his playoff viability, especially in lineups that already prioritize spacing around Nikola Jokic.
Golden State, however, presents a clearer pathway for him. The Warriors still have one open roster spot after deadline moves and are navigating injuries across their backcourt. With Stephen Curry managing knee issues and Jimmy Butler sidelined for the season, Ball’s ability to defend, pass, and push tempo could earn him a defined role.
Momentum around Golden State has continued to build as the buyout process unfolds. NBA insider Jake Fischer reported that the Warriors have their sights set on Ball and are conducting medical evaluations as part of their due diligence.
Denver is also monitoring the situation, but league chatter suggests Golden State may be in a better position to offer the California-born a clearer role.
Ball’s tenure with Cleveland was shaped by circumstance as much as performance. The Cavaliers were in a win-now posture and lacked the flexibility to allow him extended time to regain rhythm after missing multiple seasons due to serious knee injuries.
That environment led to reduced opportunities rather than gradual reintegration. Golden State’s situation is different. With expectations recalibrated by injuries and recent roster turnover, the Warriors can afford to take a low-risk swing.
