Just less than a year ago, the Golden State Warriors tried to pursue LeBron James in free agency. However, the Los Angeles Lakers star picked his player option to stay with the Purple & Gold. A year later, it seems like the Dubs are not ready to give up on the LeBron-Stephen Curry pairing dream.
James is in the last year of his contract. When this season ends, he might look for a new home. There have been reports that he might be returning to Cleveland or sign a fresh deal with Los Angeles.
According to NBA Insider Marc Stein, the four-time NBA champion might even sign with the Warriors, come the offseason. Stein said that the notion of James would end up joining the Warriors “has some legs.”

James is yet to make up his mind about retirement. In January earlier this year, The Athletic’s Sam Amick said that the Cavs and the Warriors had emerged as the potential leading spots.
So far in this season, there hasn’t been an indication that he wanted to get out of Los Angeles in favor of the Warriors. However, given how the Lakers have favored Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves during this season, it is not hard to see why James would want to explore other options.
There are rare times in his career when LeBron has taken a pay cut in his salary. He has done it if he believes that the team has a chance at the title.
The Warriors do not have the financial flexibility to sign him. If they want to sign him, the Dubs would have to convince LeBron to take a massive pay cut and convince him that it’s all worth it.
According to Tim Kawakami of The San Francisco Standard, one of the ways that the Dubs could sign James would be to get below the luxury tax threshold, which would help them access the non-taxpayer mid-level exception.
“The LeBron/Warriors rumors have percolated for years. Same financial story: He’d likely have to take a pay cut down to $15 million to consider the Warriors,” wrote Kawakami.
If the Warriors can access their $15 million mid-level exception, they could also keep their key pieces and sign LeBron James.
However, the idea of James playing for the Warriors still seems like a far-fetched idea. Competing against a mighty Warriors is part of his legacy, and he wouldn’t want to change that. Moreover, it’s hard to see how James would take a second position behind Stephen Curry.
