Through 20 games, the Celtics have improved quite a bit, sitting at the 8th seed in the Eastern Conference with an 11-9 record. The Celtics went 4-6 in their first 10 games, but are 7-3 in their last 10.
Derrick White has continued to struggle, shooting just 36% from the floor and 31% from three. His defensive impact is still as high as ever, averaging 1.7 blocks and 1.3 steals per game, but his offensive play has been a huge hit to an inconsistent Celtics offense.
Anfernee Simons has settled in after an inconsistent start to the season averaging 13 points on 48/43 shooting. Simons improved play has provided a big spark to the bench unit. Payton Pritchard has also found his groove after an up-and-down start to the season, averaging 18 points on 47% from the floor and 41% from three. Pritchard has had to step up in the midst of Derrick White's struggles and he has done just that.
Neemias Queta continues to be a key piece to the Celtics on offense and defense. His 3 offensive rebounds per game have been huge, and his defensive prescence has been a game changer. Team's have an offensive rating of 123.7 with Queta off the floor, and a 106.1 when he is on the floor. The difference in Queta's prescence on the defensive end is the Celtics being the worst defense without him and a top two defense with him.
One of the biggest surprises early on was Josh Minott's rise into the starting lineup, but has come off the bench in 8 straight games. His play has been very streaky at times but he still provides valuable minutes with hustle plays and shooting.
Josh Minott was the biggest surprise player through the first 10 games, and Jordan Walsh has taken that spot in the last 10. Walsh has started the last 8 games and has been an excellent defender as well as a play finisher both at the rim and beyond the arc.
Jaylen Brown has continued his excellent play, averaging 28 points on the season. His efficiency has dipped after a scorching start to the season but he has still been the engine to the Celtics offense.
Key Stats
The Celtics still have similar ranks on offense and defense, but the biggest difference in the Celtics 7-3 record over their last 10 has been offensive rebounding and three-point shooting.
They have jumped from 24th to 18th in three-point percentage, which has made a huge difference with the volume of threes taken. They are also now 7th in offensive rebounding, which has largely been due to Neemias Queta, Jordan Walsh and Josh Minott all emerging as extremely valuable role players.
Conclusion
Through 20 games, the Celtics have been quite the rollercoaster, beating playoff-caliber opponents and losing to lottery teams. Their inconsistency on offense and in clutch time has led to them losing games they shouldn't, but their overall team defense continues to give them a fighting chance.
