Amid the rumors, however, the Los Angeles Lakers star has not announced whether the 2025-26 season would be his final year. Fans, players and experts are left clueless about James' next step in his decorated basketball career.

Before the start of the season, the four-time champion was asked about what's next in an interview with Complex's Speedy Morman. James said that he can't play another 23 years in the league. The future Hall of Fame star also crossed out the idea of him playing another 10 years.

However, he made it clear that, while it's not quite there yet, his retirement is near.

On Wednesday's episode of "Game Over" with Rich Paul and Max Kellerman, James' agent addressed his looming retirement. Paul admitted that he had no idea if the current season would be the final one for the Lakers star.

"Everyone is like, ‘Do the farewell tour, it’s his last year.’ This and that, I don’t know what it is, but I hope it’s not his last. I hope it’s not his last year." Paul said. "I don’t talk to him about it."

Fans are left wondering about what will happen to James after the season. He's set to be an unrestricted free agent after he exercised his $52.6 million player option over the summer. The four-time MVP wasn't given an extension by the Lakers.

Although fans are aware that James' career is nearly over. The injuries he has sustained this season alone are among the most obvious indicators. The superstar has been limited to 18 games after missing the first 14 games due to sciatica. The 21-time All-Star has also dealt with other injuries that have affected his availability for the Lakers.

Fans are patiently waiting for James to announce his retirement.
