Richard Jefferson loves what Victor Wembanyama is doing, but he thinks the French center faces a unique obstacle in his NBA career.

Victor Wembanyama is truly an anomaly, as we have never seen a player above 7 feet who is as tall and skilled as the Frenchman.

The San Antonio Spurs’ big man has started the season quite well, playing some great basketball. But his last two games have shown that there is still room for growth.

Kendrick Perkins claimed Luka Doncic outplayed Wembanyama on the defensive end during the LA Lakers’ win over the Spurs.

But Richard Jefferson believes Wembanyama’s struggles come down to a unique challenge he faces due to his physical gifts.

Richard Jefferson says Victor Wembanyama has no blueprint to follow from previous players

Richard Jefferson spoke on the Road Trippin’ podcast about Victor Wembanyama’s struggles against the Lakers.

He believes that Wembanyama is in a difficult position, as he doesn’t have a blueprint from a historic player to follow, as there has never been a player like him in the past.

“I think Wemby is obviously dominating. But he doesn’t have a blueprint. There is no blueprint for him… Even LeBron had a Magic Johnson blueprint, a Scottie Pippen blueprint…

“With Michael Jordan, you have a Kobe Bryant. There are certain blueprints of like, ‘This is who I am, this is how other players like me have dominated the game.’

“He’s at such a level that there’s never been a player like him. So, we know he can dominate the game, but how does he figure out a way to dominate the game at a consistent level that is unstoppable?

“He has that ability. They just haven’t figured it out. It might take him a little bit longer because there is no blueprint.

“You had small guards that could score, like Allen Iverson. You had guys like Isiah Thomas… You had John Stockton, Jason Kidd, and Gary Payton.

“You had blueprint players throughout the league. He’s such a player that’s so far out of any blueprint we’ve ever seen. That means it’s even harder for the coach to figure out how to use him best.

“His body has gotten so much stronger. But where is he best used? Because we don’t have a blueprint! There’s no blueprint…

Victor Wembanyama needs more time to develop into a megastar

Victor Wembanyama is learning that his size and skill aren’t a guaranteed ticket to success in the NBA. He needs to figure out how to get the best out of his tools going forward.

If he doesn’t, Wembanyama could be figured out by other defenses, which will make it much harder for him to put up the big numbers many expect him to in his career.

Early in the season, Wembanyama led several NBA teams in blocks. But now, his numbers are very gradually declining, and he must try to figure things out.

It is still very early in the season, so Wembanyama has the advantage of addressing his issues and making sure he fulfills the high expectations he entered the season with.
