The Los Angeles Lakers are 8-3 and sit in fourth place in the Western Conference.
Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves have carried the load offensively while LeBron James eyes a return to the court.
James is practicing with the G League’s South Bay Lakers as he ramps up basketball activities and nears a return.
The Los Angeles Lakers have not provided an exact timeline for James’ return, but this marks the first practice James has participated in since his sciatica injury was announced in October.
In the meantime, the Lakers have managed just fine despite James’ absence.
They have also overcome an injury that sidelined Doncic for four of the team’s first seven games.
Reaves and several role players have stepped up, helping the Lakers get off to a strong start.
Richard Jefferson offered his insight on how the Lakers will be once James returns.
“We are basing 10 games against 23 years of work.
“I have no problem with LeBron taking a backseat. He was part of them bringing in Luka. He was trying to hand the keys to AD. Bron has been ready to hand the keys to people. I’m not disputing that.
“But let’s not talk about as if they gonna make a Playoff run, a Finals run, Bron is not going to be a much bigger piece. People are trying to say, ‘oh, Bron just needs to stand in the corner for multiple possessions’.
“There’s only one basketball so if Luka and Austin are playing, they don’t have a third ball handler currently, right now, not really.
“In my opinion, who would you want catching and shooting? Bron or Austin Reaves. I don’t think it’s gonna be hard to figure it out.”
When James returns a lot of the offense will be on his plate, but the Lakers must provide balance.
Doncic must remain the focal point on offense and Reaves should be the secondary option.
At this stage of his career, James should defer and be the third option that can make plays and hit open shots.
If the focus shifts back to James and things fall out of order, then the Lakers could falter.
