The Houston Rockets may have found their next breakout guard. After an eye-catching preseason, Reed Sheppard is making a convincing case that he deserves a significant role in Ime Udoka’s rotation heading into the 2025–26 campaign.
Sheppard’s rise has been gradual but expected. Selected third overall in the 2024 NBA Draft, the Kentucky product entered the league with a reputation for efficiency, basketball IQ and defensive instincts beyond his years.
His rookie season was marked by inconsistency, as he averaged 4.5 points, 1.5 rebounds and 1.3 assists across 51 games (12.5 minutes per contest). Still, flashes of promise hinted at a player who could blossom once given the opportunity.
In January, Sheppard was assigned to Houston’s G League affiliate, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, where he immediately made his presence felt.
Over three games, he averaged 30.7 points, 4.3 rebounds and 8.3 assists, including a stunning 49-point debut on Jan. 7 that featured eight made three-pointers, six assists and three steals. The brief stint made it clear that Sheppard was too talented for the NBA’s minor league.

He returned to the Rockets with an increased role, highlighted by a career-high 25 points against the Oklahoma City Thunder on March 3 in what was his first NBA start.
With veteran guard Fred VanVleet sidelined indefinitely due to a torn ACL, Sheppard has seized the extra floor time throughout the 2025 preseason. After solid showings earlier in October, the 21-year-old delivered his signature performance in Houston’s preseason finale against the Atlanta Hawks on Thursday.
It was a 29-point, six-rebound, six-assist, four-steal, three-block showcase that had teammates and coaches raving. Sheppard shot 12-for-22 from the field and 5-for-13 from deep, displaying the three-level scoring ability and defensive energy that made him a top-three pick.
Have a day, @reed_sheppard!

The performance followed 13-point and 11-point outings against the New Orleans Pelicans and Utah Jazz, respectively, in limited minutes that also included several steals and blocks.
Even before that breakout night, Sheppard’s preseason numbers reflected steady growth, an improvement in shot creation, assertiveness and defensive discipline that could earn him early-season minutes on a new-look, Kevin Durant-led Rockets team.
Still, perspective is needed. His 29-point explosion came in a game where most of Houston’s starters rested, prompting some to caution against overreaction.
The real test will come when Sheppard faces top-tier defenses in regular-season play. His decision-making under pressure, ability to handle physicality and shooting consistency will determine how quickly he can solidify a rotation spot.
For now, the signs are promising. Sheppard’s strong preseason has given Houston another reliable option on an already talented roster.
