The Dallas Mavericks appear fully committed to building their future around Cooper Flagg, and they have all the good reasons and resources to do it.

However, rival executives already wonder whether that timeline aligns with Kyrie Irving and where the franchise is heading.

According to a new report from HoopsHype, rival NBA executives are closely monitoring how long Irving and Flagg can realistically coexist as foundational pieces in Dallas. The real issue comes down to the timing.

“Flagg and Irving can form an effective duo has left rival executives around the league wondering how long Irving, a nine-time All-Star who’s coming off a torn left ACL and just turned 34, can co-exist with Flagg when the two players are on different career timelines?” Michael Scotto reported.

Flagg is just 19 years old and fresh off a Rookie of the Year campaign, while Irving recently turned 34 and is recovering from a torn ACL. The Mavericks also finished 26-56 this season and missed the playoffs, placing the franchise in an unusual position between rebuilding and competing.

Still, newly hired Mavericks president Masai Ujiri has publicly backed the pairing multiple times since arriving in Dallas.

“Kevin Durant once told me that there’s only one Kyrie walking around in the world,” Ujiri said recently. “We have to figure out a way how Kyrie fits with our program.”

Ujiri also described the organization as “curious” to see how Irving and Flagg develop chemistry together moving forward. Dallas general manager Mike Schmitz echoed that optimism, calling the duo “a match made in Heaven” because of Irving’s shot creation and Flagg’s versatility as a connector on both ends of the floor.

Despite those public endorsements, executives around the league reportedly remain skeptical about the long-term fit.

Kyrie Irving’s Future Looks Bleak As Mavs Plan Center Around Cooper Flagg

The Mavericks may have finally found their next franchise cornerstone in Cooper Flagg, but his rapid rise is also creating uncomfortable questions about the future of Kyrie Irving.

Dallas spent the past year completely reshaping its organization. From the shocking Luka Doncic trade to the firing of general manager Nico Harrison and the recent arrival of Masai Ujiri.

Now, everything appears centered around Flagg after the 19-year-old captured Rookie of the Year honors following an impressive debut season. That reality has naturally placed Irving’s long-term role under the microscope. According to Shams Charania, multiple contenders are already monitoring Irving’s situation in Dallas.

“Multiple contenders are keeping an eye on Irving right now,” Charania said during an appearance on NBA Today. “He’s got a guaranteed year left on his deal and then he’s got a player option, so that does give him some leverage on his future.”

Irving is still recovering from a torn ACL and has yet to share the floor with Flagg in a regular-season game. While he remains one of the league’s most skilled offensive players, Dallas now faces a difficult balancing act.

Still, around the league, there is growing skepticism about how long that partnership can realistically last.
