The Indiana Pacers played the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 1 of the NBA Finals on Thursday inside the Paycom Center.
During a tense second half, during which the Thunder led by as many as 15 points, Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton spearheaded a comeback effort, ending the game with a 14-point and 10-rebound double-double.
During the fourth quarter, Haliburton, 25, only scored two points before making the game-winning mid-range shot with only 0.3 seconds remaining, to lead Indiana to a 111-110 triumph. However, his heroic performances have come after he has received a fair amount of criticism from the basketball world.
In April, Haliburton was voted the league’s “most overrated player” by 13 anonymous players and received 14.4 percent of the votes, according to an end-of-regular-season poll conducted by The Athletic. The phrase “overrated” carried over into the postseason, where Milwaukee Bucks, Cleveland Cavaliers and New York Knicks fans chanted the term at him. That didn’t stop Haliburton because he remained confident in his abilities and led Indiana to victory against all three of those teams.
Furthermore, former ESPN college football analyst Robert Griffin III shut down fan claims surrounding Haliburton to show support after watching his performance.
“Tyrese Haliburton was never overrated,” Griffin wrote on X on Thursday after Game 1. “But he has always been OVERHATED.”
The 35-year-old former NFL quarterback continued, “What a shot on the biggest stage of the NBA Finals .”

He also seemed to enjoy the situation because he wrote after, “What the Helly Burton JUST HAPPENED?!?”
Haliburton and the Pacers are back in action against the Thunder in Sunday's Game 2 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
