The Houston Rockets have been on a hot streak, entering Saturday’s game against the Dallas Mavericks riding a four-game winning streak.

A major reason for the team’s success this season has been the play of center Alperen Sengun, now in his fifth year with the organization.

The 23-year-old big man earned his first All-Star selection last season and has continued to shine thanks to his versatile offensive skill set, strong passing instincts and ability to anchor the frontcourt.

Through his first 27 appearances, Sengun has averaged 22.6 points, 9.3 rebounds, 6.7 assists and 1.5 steals while shooting 51.2% from the field and 31.7% from 3-point range.

His blend of scoring, playmaking and interior presence has made him one of the most impactful young centers in the league and a driving force behind Houston’s rise as a contender.

On Saturday, Sengun’s night was interrupted almost immediately. Barely a minute into the first quarter, he came down awkwardly while securing a rebound and grimaced in visible discomfort.

The Rockets quickly called a timeout, and Sengun was replaced by veteran backup Clint Capela. Trainers escorted him to the locker room for further evaluation.

Moments later, Houston provided clarity on the injury, announcing that Sengun had sustained a right lateral ankle sprain and was listed as questionable to return (h/t Tim MacMahon of ESPN). By halftime, however, the Rockets ruled him out for the remainder of the game, confirming his night was over.

The injury cast a shadow over what has been a promising stretch for Houston. Losing Sengun for any extended period would be a major blow, as his scoring and playmaking have been vital to the Rockets’ offensive success.

With Houston fighting to climb the Western Conference standings, Sengun’s recovery could determine whether the Rockets sustain their momentum or struggle to keep pace.

Sengun’s NBA journey has been notable. He was originally selected 16th overall by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the 2021 NBA Draft, but was quickly traded to Houston on draft night.

That decision has proven costly for Oklahoma City, as Sengun has blossomed into one of the league’s most skilled young centers and an essential figure in the Rockets’ future. His status will continue to be closely monitored.
