The Houston Rockets have emerged as a top contender in the Western Conference this season, powered by their high-scoring offense and the defensive intensity of their young core. As they push toward the postseason, however, a key part of that formula is managing an injury concern.

On Friday, the Rockets announced on their official injury report, All-Defensive guard Amen Thompson has officially been downgraded to questionable with a right ankle sprain against the Portland Trail Blazers.

Thompson has attempted to play through the injury in recent games, including on Thursday against the Golden State Warriors. He logged 44 minutes, finishing with 18 points, 10 rebounds and five assists, though the team still came up short.

Despite the strong performance, Thompson was visibly in discomfort throughout the night, especially in the fourth quarter (h/t Lachard Binkley of Rockets on SI).

Thompson’s defensive versatility and energy on both ends of the floor have been vital to Houston’s success. If he is limited or forced to miss extended time, the Rockets will need to lean on their depth to offset the potential loss of one of their most productive two-way contributors.

Thompson has been a critical two-way presence for Houston this season. Over 59 games, he is averaging 17.4 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 5.2 assists while shooting an efficient 51.2% from the field. He has also contributed to 1.5 steals and 0.6 blocks per game, frequently drawing assignments against the opposing team’s top perimeter scorer and excelling in isolation defense.

If Thompson is limited or sidelined, the Rockets will likely lean more heavily on their top scoring options, Kevin Durant and Alperen Sengun, to carry the offensive load. Sengun’s interior presence and playmaking would become even more central to Houston’s half-court sets, while Durant’s scoring ability would be critical in late-game situations.

Defensively, Tari Eason could see an expanded role, particularly in perimeter matchups, as the Rockets work to replace Thompson’s on-ball pressure and maintain their defensive identity during a crucial stretch of the season.

Houston’s immediate priority is securing its playoff position while maintaining the offensive and defensive balance that has defined its season. With Thompson’s health now in question, the Rockets face uncertainty at a pivotal point in the year.

The former No. 4 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft has continued to develop into a reliable two-way guard, embracing his role and expanding his impact on both ends of the floor.

Thompson has showcased his defensive instincts against elite scorers while also proving capable of generating offense against top-tier defenders. His progression has been one of the most encouraging developments for the franchise this season.
