Giannis Antetokounmpo's name continues to be floated in trade rumors. The Milwaukee Bucks have endured a tough start to the season, losing nine of their 13 games. When a supposedly contending team struggles like that out of the gates, questions arise regarding the viability of the current roster construction.
Milwaukee is a team with few trade assets. It lacks a wealth of upcoming young talent, is thin on draft picks and gave up what little it did have in the deal to acquire Damian Lillard. As such, Giannis is seen as the most logical trade chip if the front office opts to hit the reset button.
According to Marc Stein, via his The Stein Line newsletter, the Houston Rockets could emerge as a potential landing spot for Giannis. Ime Udoka's team boasts a wealth of potentially blue-chip talent and an array of draft picks.
While the Bucks are steadfast in their desire to keep Giannis around, a team like Houston could potentially give them a fresh start if they continue to struggle.
"This has been interpreted in some corners of the league, as noted in a recent Sunday notebook, as a strategy designed to give the Rockets more time to see if dream trade target Kevin Durant were to become available down the road," Stein reported. "...The following expansion of the conversation was inevitable given the various combinations of rising prospects and draft picks that the Rockets can assemble in theoretical trade offers, but similar whispers have begun to percolate among rival teams monitoring a potential down-the-road Houston pursuit of Giannis Antetokounmpo."

Giannis would make far more sense for Houston than Kevin Durant. He is younger and doesn't have a history that includes an ACL injury. Udoka would likely welcome the physicality and defensive versatility Giannis would bring to the rotation, too.
Nevertheless, Houston may be waiting a long time for Giannis to hit the trade market. He is arguably the greatest player in Bucks history. The front office would be reluctant to lose him, especially if it believes other options are available.
As Stein reported in his Nov. 9 newsletter, Giannis is unlikely to be moved unless he forces the issue himself, meaning he must request a trade.
"It is understood quite clearly in 29 other front offices that Antetokounmpo is only ever going to be made available for trade if he pushes for it," Stein reported. "But a handful of teams out there have certainly begun planning for such an eventuality — and, in some cases, have already let the Bucks know that they will be ready to talk trade if team officials ever reach that point — even if Milwaukee has zero interest in such discussions as we speak."
Houston is perfectly situated to swing for the fences when a superstar talent hits the trade market. Sure, it will have a wish list of dream targets, and Giannis is likely in the top two. Nevertheless, the franchise wants to return to being a contending team. As such, it may get impatient while waiting for Giannis or even Durant.
Still, Milwaukee must tread carefully. The vultures are starting to circle, and they're honing in on the team's crown jewel. Only a turnaround in fortunes can stave them off.
