Al Horford and De’Anthony Melton already have verbal agreements in place with the Golden State Warriors, according to NBA insider Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints.
The Warriors are waiting to see how Jonathan Kuminga‘s restricted free agency pans out before officially adding Horford and Melton.
“The Dubs’ main problem is that there simply isn’t a market for Kuminga right now. This situation could drag on into August, which continues to stall other deals the team has lined up in free agency,” Siegel wrote.
“As previously reported multiple times in our Siegel’s Scoop column, Al Horford and De’Anthony Melton are widely expected to sign with the Warriors. A handful of teams at NBA Summer League stated Horford and Melton already have verbal agreements in place with Golden State.”
Horford played for the Boston Celtics last season, while Melton appeared in six games with the Warriors before tearing his left ACL and getting traded to the Brooklyn Nets.
The Warriors won 48 games last season. They beat the Houston Rockets in the first round of the playoffs in seven games but lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the second round in five games.
Golden State won Game 1 of the conference semifinals in Minnesota. However, Stephen Curry suffered a left hamstring injury in Game 1 and missed the rest of the series. Without the NBA legend, Golden State lost four games in a row.
Horford played in 60 games for the Celtics last season. The five-time All-Star and 2024 NBA champion averaged 9.0 points, 6.2 rebounds and 2.1 assists while shooting 42.3% overall, 36.3% from beyond the arc and 89.5% from the foul line.
Meanwhile, Melton averaged 10.3 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.8 assists last season with Golden State while shooting 40.7% from the field, 37.1% from beyond the arc and 62.5% from the free-throw line.
The Warriors haven’t made any moves in free agency yet. Kuminga’s restricted free agency is holding things up.
