Rumor: Atlanta Hawks Eyeing Former UConn Star With No. 1 Overall Pick
David Butler II-USA TODAY Sports

The Atlanta Hawks got a gift when they won the NBA Draft lottery. Despite pushing for a playoff spot, they secured the number one overall pick in the draft. The downside is this draft is one of the weakest in recent memory. Still, that does not mean there are not quality players the Hawks could get to help their team. According to an ESPN report, the organization is eyeing Donovan Clingan with the number one overall pick.

Atlanta Hawks Like Donovan Clingan?

ESPN’s Jonathan Givony reported there is “some chatter” that people inside the Atlanta Hawks organization are “fans” of the former UConn star. In a draft where there is no clear number one overall pick, looking to the player who has won back-to-back national championships is not the worst idea. Atlanta needs a big man to pair with Trae Young and/or Dejounte Murray. Clint Capela is on an expiring deal and could be used as trade bait if they decide to go with Donovan Clingan.

Bleacher Reports Jonathan Wasserman thinks Clingan will be a quality starter in the NBA.

“The buzz and excitement around Donovan Clingan seems to be growing, even after he anchored Connecticut’s national title run. Scouts and executives were impressed with the easy ball he shot during workouts at the combine, considering Clingan attempted just eight threes all season.”

With a crucial offseason approaching for the Atlanta Hawks, they need to use the gift of the number one overall pick wisely. This could change their franchise forever or cripple them for years to come.

What Happens With Young And Murray?

Before they landed the pick, reports indicated that the team would try and trade one of its stars. However, landing the number one overall pick might change things. If they feel they can add via trades and this pick, the Atlanta Hawks could decide to keep the core intact. Another aspect of this that might change things is the value of a player like Young. It is unclear what other teams would give up for Young or Murray.

The Atlanta Hawks are at a crossroads. They owe future picks to the San Antonio Spurs, so tanking may not be an option. Whether it is Donovan Clingan or another player, the Hawks are looking for their next franchise cornerstone as they try to compete in the Eastern Conference.
